Between 1992 and 2004, the NWS's NEXRAD radar system prevented over 330 fatalities and 7800 injuries from tornadoes, resulting in a socioeconomic benefit of over $3 billion. This savings may be compared to the total capital of site acquisition and NEXRAD preparation cost of less than $1.7 billion, in 2004 dollars (Sutter and Simmons, 2006).
